Best Overall Areas
Seminyak is a common first-time base because it has restaurants, beach clubs, shopping, and many hotel choices. Canggu is more cafe and nightlife focused, but traffic can be frustrating. Ubud is the best inland base for rice terraces, yoga, crafts, and day trips. Sanur is calmer and easier for families.
Beach and Resort Choices
Nusa Dua works for resort travelers who want clean beaches, polished hotels, and fewer daily logistics. Uluwatu is better for cliffs, surf, sunset views, and dramatic beaches, but it is not as convenient for seeing the rest of the island. Kuta is close to the airport and nightlife but is not the best match for every first-time traveler.
Traffic Reality
Bali should be planned by travel time, not map distance. A hotel that looks close to everything may still sit behind heavy traffic. If you want both beaches and Ubud, consider splitting the stay. If you only have four nights, choose one base and take selective day trips.
Simple Recommendation
For couples, choose Seminyak plus Ubud if time allows. For families, consider Sanur or Nusa Dua. For nightlife and cafes, choose Canggu or Seminyak. For scenery and wellness, choose Ubud. The right Bali base depends less on the island and more on the version of Bali you want.
